FIVE Questions to consider in choosing driver education instructor.

  1. Can this instructor explain in detail the goals of the instruction process?
  2. What is the experience and educational background of the instructor?
  3. Is the instructor a Licensed and Approved Third Party Tester (license testing)?
  4. Does the student get 6 actual hours of driving individually or do they have two or three other students in the car and are given credit for driving when they are riding around while the other students are driving?
  5. Price of the Course.  What is more important to you; your child's safety and getting what you pay for, or price?

Classroom - Behind the wheel (BTW)

SC STATE LAW REQUIRES 15 AND 16 YEAR OLD STUDENTS TO COMPLETE 8 HOURS CLASSROOM AND 6 HOURS BEHIND THE WHEEL INSTRUCTION AND PASS THE KNOWLEDGE PERMIT TEST.  AFTER HAVING THE PERMIT FOR 180 DAYS AND HAVING COMPLETED  THE REQUIRED 8 HOUR CLASSROOM AND 6 HOUR DRIVING INSTRUCTION; THEY CAN TEST FOR THE SC CONDITIONAL PROVISIONAL LICENSE THAT THEY MUST DRIVE ON FOR ONE YEAR! (OFTEN REFERRED TO AS A DAY LICENSE)
*NOTE:  Students involved in church or school activities that require them to travel after the restricted driving times may request a waiver at age 16.
The Eight Hours of classroom instruction is usually done in two four hour sessions from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM days school is out or school system holidays.  Class size is limited to six students!
The SIX HOURS BTW (usually 3 sessions of 2 hrs. behind the wheel) instruction is individual instruction, scheduled on the students free time after school or on weekends or holidays!  I will pick the student up either at school or at home or a place the parent designates.

THINK ABOUT THIS:

Guide for Parents of NEW DRIVERS !! DO's & DON'TS

 Do's

  • Know SC Law on 15 and 16 year old Beginning Drivers.
    1. Must have beginners permit 180 days before testing!
    2. Must take approved course .  (Driving class & behind wheel training)
    3. Must have at least 40 hours practice.  (license driver over 21 supervised)
  • Talk to the person or persons instructing the student .  (Can they explain the class & BTW System that will be taught?)
    1.  What System Taught.   Behind the wheel progression.
    2.  Pick up & drop off policy.
Do not's

DO NOT PUT BEGINNING DRIVERS INTO BUSY TRAFFIC OR INTERSTATE SITUATIONS TO EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Do not raise your voice above emphasis levels.
  • Start with teaching controls.  (Dash, lights, signals, horn, defroster, dashboard, emergency brake, steering hand position) FOOT POSITION & pressure for Braking & Accelleration.
  • DO NOT TEACH THEM TO watch or reference lines on roadway.  They will not be able to drive defensively by seeing pavement markings !  Vision should reach out, aimed high, 15 to 20 seconds ahead.  We must emphasize anticipation of the intent of traffic and use of mirrows! {especially rearview (every 4 to 6 Seconds)}
  • Do not over emphasize speed.  Instead emphasize thier position (space) in traffic Flow.
    • Emphasize but keep in mind that they cannot control traffic behind them.  It does help them realize if they should check thier speed or realize that the driver behind them is a poor driver.
    • EMPHASIVE EYE ACTIVITY WITH REARVIEW MIRROR
    • YOU MUST EMPHASIZE EYE ACTIVITY AT ALL INTERSECTICTIONS!!!
